Inspired by the dream journals of Carl Jung and an episode from the Hawaiian mythology of Pele.
A Breath Of Life / My Soul (生命の息/ 魂（サイケ・ソウル・アニマ）)
「私の魂よ、どこにいるのだ？私の声が聞こえるか？ 私だ。あなたに呼びかけているのだ。そこにいるのか？ 私はもどってきた。」（My Soul のフル・テキストはAyuoのブログを見てください。）
火山と地震の女神であるペレはタヒチからやってきて、姉妹たちとともに、ハワイ島東海岸プナの火山地帯に住むことにした。そのとき、彼女は夢で魂となって自分の体から飛び出し、北にあるカウアイ島に住んでいたロヒアウの歌を聴き踊りを見ようとした。ロヒアウは美しい少年だった。
ペレはロヒアウにいった。
「私は姉妹のひとりをそちらに送り、ハワイ島の私の家で暮らすようおまえを招きます。
そこでみんなで大きなひとつの家族として暮らそう」
姉妹たちの中で、いちばん若いヒイアカが、ロヒアウを迎えに行くことになった。卵だったころからペレが胸で温めて育てた子だ。
ペレは彼女にいった、「旅に出なさい。おまえを邪魔するものは何もない。おまえの力は女の力。男の力など、比べものにもならない」
北の島への旅で、ヒイアカはたくさんの困難に出会った。でもそれぞれの困難が人生における学びの経験のようなもので、学ぶごとに彼女は強くなった。
未知への長い旅は、自分自身の中での長い旅に似ている。
ある問題に直面するとき、それに似たなんらかの傾向を自分自身の中に見出すことになる、それに気づくことが人生におけるひとつの学びなのだ。
ヒイアカがカウアイ島に着いたとき、ロヒアウは死んでいた。彼の魂はこの生きている者たちの世界を離れ、別の次元にいた。
命の息よ
人の中に入りなさい
人の心よ
これが命の息です
するとロヒアウは叫び声をあげて目を覚ました
それは生まれ変わりの叫びだった。
もとの体への。
こうしてヒイアカはロヒアウに命を取り戻させ、彼と連れだって、ハワイ島の家に戻る旅にかかった。

ハワイ神話ペレからのエピソード。火山と地震の女神であるペレはカウアイ島のロヒアウにひとめ惚れして、一番下の妹のヒイアカに彼をハワイ島に連れてくる事を頼む。
ヒイアカは再生の女神でもある。ヒイアカはロヒアウに命を取り戻す儀式をおこなってから彼をハワイ島の家に連れて帰るが、ロヒアウはすでに、自分を生き返らせてくれた女神ヒイアカに愛情を抱くようになっていた。

The Flesh and the Mirror

The title comes from a short story by Angela Carter, one of my favorite authors. It is about a Scottish-English woman who comes to Japan following her Japanese boyfriend in the 1970s. She realizes that the cultural difference between the societies they come from is so large that she can only comprehend what she created in her own mind. In reality, she probably isn't even seeing his face properly.
Being raised as an Asian-American in the States and coming to Japan in the mid-1970s felt like this.

こになかった考え方は全てその人にとっては異文化のものであって、本当は見えていない。翻訳を通して分かったつもりでいるだけであった。「世界中の人々は分かり合うことができる」というのはウソである。表面的なことしか見えていなく、その後ろには深い歴史が作った伝統の山が隠れている。音楽さえも世界中の人々は同じように理解ができない。」
僕が10代前半の頃は、イラン系の義父 (Step-father) とアイリッシュ系の義母 (Step-mother)がいて、特にアイリッシュ系の義母と父の間には文化的な衝突がすごくありました。1970年代の前半に父と義母は東京に引っ越した。僕は母と義父と共にニューヨークにいたが、ある夏休みの時に母と義父が突然別居すると 衝突していた義母と父のところに来た。自分の書いている作品にはこうした文化的な衝突の経験が含まれている。
僕自身はアメリカ育ちなので、文化と文化の間で生きることになったが、感覚はニューヨークで育った1960年代から1970年代の人のままであると60代近くになっても感じている。
「鏡と体」は同じく1970年代前半に日本人の恋人を追って日本に来た経験を描いたアンジェラ・カーターの短編小説のタイトル。

Inspired by reading Angela Carter's short stories about living in Japan. 4 bars of an old Irish tune is quoted in the middle. This music is about a Celtic woman facing a culture shock. Cultures often seem similar on the surface, if people wear the same fashion. But once you've stayed awhile in a culture that you haven't been raised in, the differences slowly creep on you. Often the differences are hard to detect at first. Being raised as an Asian-Ameican, I felt many of the same things that Angela Carter did when she lived in Japan.
