（日本語歌詞と解説は下期にあります。）These Japanese folk songs arranged for a rock band was made in search for something similar to how Fairport Convention and Steeleye Span had arranged British ballads and how Clannad had arranged Irish ballads.
I did not grow up listening to these songs, but instead I grew up singing British and American folk songs, since I grew up in NYC. The singer, Hiroe Ueda, however, learned half of these songs from her grandmother.
Two of the songs, "Hietsuki-bushi" and "刈干切歌 (Kari Boshi Kiri Uta/A Song For Cutting And Drying) are songs from poor peasants. "Hietsuki-bushi" is a song about poor peasants who cannot afford to eat rice, but only "Hie"(Japanese wild millet). In the second verse, they are revealed to be descendents of the Heike clan who lost power at court in the 12th century and became part of the poorest peasants in Kyushu, the southernmost island in Japan. I perform the Chinese Zheng here as well as 12-string guitar.
The guitar part to "刈干切歌 (Kariboshikiri-uta/A Song For Cutting And Drying) was inspired by Martin Carthy and Richard Thompson. The guitar tuning is FGDGCD, which I learned from the playing of Richard Thompson.
"Kariboshikiri-uta" (Songs about reaping thatch) is a song about harvesting thatch sung mainly in the Takachiho region of Miyazaki Prefecture. The work of reaping thatch such as silver grass, chigaya, and sedge is called "kariboshi kiri," and this song was sung as a work song.After drying, the thatch is used to make thatched roofs and as winter fodder for cattle and horses.
I made a blues-rock arranggement of "機織り唄”　(Hata Ori Uta/The Weaver). The main riff is based on the original riff played on the Shamisen. I play this on a 12-string guitar in open tuning. There is some nylon string adlibs and sustained notes bowed by ebow on the guitar towards the end. For me, the lyrics reminded me of the British ballad, "The Weaver And The Factory Maid" as performed by Steeleye Span.

"Kotsukotsu-bushi",is a folk song from Hita City, Oita Prefecture in Kyushu. As sung with the accompaniment of the three -string Shamisen, this song is said to have been composed by the female poet Fujinoi Rinjo during the Ansei era (1615-1626). Until the early Showa period, the geishas from Hakata and Beppu were required to be able to sing "Kotsukotsu-bushi". This folk song is now preserved by the "Kotsukotsu-bushi Preservation Society".
When I first heard "Kotsukotsu-bushi", I did not realize that this was a traditional song sung by the geishas. I thought this was a love song, just like many of the English, Irish and Scottish ballads that I grew up listening to. However, I soon realized that in olden Japanese societies and many East Asian societies, arranged marriages were the most common, so there were not many love songs as those in the West. The geisha songs seemed to have been looked on as immoral songs as I was later to doscover.
In Kyushu, I also found a tradition of Ming Dynasty songs from China. However, they too were songs by Japanese geishas to entertain the Chinese guests who were allowed to reside in parts of Nagasaki, Kyushu. During the Edo period (1603 - 1867), the Tokugawa government led a period of isolation in which onky Qing dynastry China and Holland were allowed to trade with Japan. Tsu-shima was also used as a meeting place between the governments of Korea and Japan.
In Nagasaki, geishas were assigned to provide both entertainment and service for guests from China and Holland. As a result, there were said to be many children born there who were half-Dutch or half-Chinese.
A part of my ancestry is from this area of Nagasaki.

この日本の民謡をロック・バンド用にアレンジしたものは、フェアポート・コンベンションやスティーリー・スパンがイギリスのバラードを、クラナドがアイルランドのバラードをアレンジしたものに近いものを探して作ったものです。
僕はNY育ちなので、これらの曲を聴いて育ったわけではなく、イギリスやアメリカのフォークソングを歌って育ちました。しかし、歌手の活恵さんは、これらの曲の半分を祖母から習ったという。
中でも「ひえつき節」と「刈干切歌」の2曲は、貧しい農民の歌である。「ひえつき節」は、米を食べる余裕のない貧しい農民が、ひえしか食べることができないという歌である。2番の歌詞で、彼らは12世紀に宮廷の権力を失った平家の子孫であり、逃げて九州の貧しい農民として隠れて生きていたことが明らかになる。僕はここで中国の筝を演奏するとともに、12弦ギターも演奏している。
「刈干切歌」のギタ・ーパートは、マーティン・カーシーとリチャード・トンプソンの英国民謡のギターの弾き方の影響が聴こえてくる。チューニングはリチャード・トンプソンのプレイから学んだFGDGCD。

「機織り唄 」をブルース・ロック風にアレンジしてみました。メイン・リフは三味線で弾くオリジナルのリフがベースになっています。僕はこれを12弦ギターでオープンチューニングで弾いています。最後のほうでは、ナイロン弦のアドリブや、ギターでイEbowを使った持続音も入っています。歌詞は僕にとって、Steeleye Spanが演奏したイギリスのバラード「The Weaver And The Factory Maid」を思い起こさせるものでした。

「こつこつ節」 は、九州の大分県日田市の民謡である。三味線の伴奏で歌われるこの曲は、安政年間（1615-1626）に女流歌人・藤乃井林丈が詠んだと言われている。 昭和初期まで、博多や別府の芸子さんたちは「こつこつ節」を歌うことが義務づけられていた。お座敷には欠かせない民謡だったと言われています。この民謡は現在、「こつこつ節保存会」によって保存されている。

初めて「こつこつ節」を聴いたとき、これが芸者さんの歌う伝統的な歌だとは思いませんでした。私が聴いてきたイギリスやアイルランド、スコットランドのバラッドと同じように、ラブソングだと思ったからでした。しかし、昔の日本や多くの東アジアの社会では、お見合い結婚が一般的で、西洋のようなラブ・ソングはあまりなかったことが後にわかった。芸者の歌は、また、不道徳な歌として見られていたようである。
九州では、中国から来た明代の歌の伝統も見つけた。しかし、これも日本の芸者が、九州の長崎の一部に居住を許された中国人客をもてなすために歌ったものである。江戸時代（1603〜1867）、徳川幕府は鎖国を行い、清国とオランダは日本との交易を許された。また、津島は朝鮮半島と日本の政府間の会談の場としても使われた。
長崎では、芸者が中国やオランダからの賓客をもてなし、サービスすることになった。その結果、オランダや中国とのハーフの子供が多く生まれていたという。
僕の先祖の一部も、長崎から来ているようだ。
