These kinds of tracks are at the roots of my music.
The compositions that I have composed for classical instruments, including string quartets, chamber music, music for piano and music for Japanese traditional instruments, have their roots in my open tuning guitar songs.
I began music by learning the guitar at the age of 8, and then started experimenting with different types of guitar tunings. By the time I was 13, I became aware of the tunings used by Martin Carthy, John Renbourn, as well as blues players. I was most influenced by guitar playing of Martin Carthy and Richard Thompson because they showed the world a new way to adapt world folk melodies. There is a similarity in ancient and medieval music in the East, Middle East and the West before western chords became dominant.
For me, songs such as "Cam Ye O'er Fro France" and "The Blacksmith" sounded very Easterm despite the fact that it was a Scottish melody. This is what I was pursuing at the age of 13.
When I listen to my compositions such as "Matsukaze" and "Izutsu" included in "Classical Japanese Poetry Set To Original Music", I hear influences from open tuning guitar as well as the Celtic harp. Sometimes they were composed on the guitar and some parts were composed on the harp.

オープンチューニングギターの曲

このような曲が、僕の音楽のルーツである。
僕がこれまで作曲してきた弦楽四重奏などのクラシック楽器、室内楽、ピアノ曲、邦楽器曲のルーツにオープンチューニング・ギターの曲があります。
僕は8歳からギターを習い始め、様々なチューニングのギターを試しながら音楽を始めました。13歳の頃には、Martin CarthyやJohn Renbourn、ブルース・プレイヤーが使っていたチューニングを意識するようになりました。僕がMartin CarthyやRichard Thompsonのギター・プレイに最も影響を受けたのは、彼らが民謡や中世音楽のメロディーをアレンジする新しい方法を見せてくれたからです。コード進行が西洋音楽に使えわれるようになる前の古代や中世ヨーロッパ音楽には東洋や中東の音楽と多くの共通点がある。
Steeleye Spanの歌った『Cam Ye O'er Fro France』や『The Blacksmith』などの曲は、スコットランドのメロディであるにもかかわらず、僕にとっては日本音楽、イランの音楽などの東洋音楽らしい響きをもっていた。これを13歳の頃から追求し始めていた。
Classical Japanese Poetry Set To Original Music』に収録されている「松風」や「井筒」を聴くと、オープンチューニング・ギターやケルティック・ハープの影響を受けているのがよく聴くと分わかります。ある部分はギターで、ある部分はハープで作曲されています。
